Raúl Linked With MLS Move

Raúl González, or just Raúl as he's generally known, has today been linked with a move from Real Madrid to the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer. Raúl has been a legendary figure at Real Madrid, the only club he has played for in his professional career, and in his 17 years there he has notched up records for leading goal scorer for Madrid (321 goals), the national team (44) and in the Champions League (60). A move to New York for Raúl would be the biggest for MLS since David Beckham signed for the Los Angeles Galaxy.

It is unusual for someone to have such a long career at Real Madrid considering the big spending and revolving door policy they have each summer but this season he has fallen somewhat out of favor and is unable to hold down a regular first team place. Raúl's current contract runs out in 2011 but it is understood that Madrid are willing to release him early bearing in mind the size and quality of their squad. His wages are in the region of $150,000 a week which don't seem to be putting off his potential suitor.

This afternoon, a Red Bulls spokesman said there was “no truth” in the reports. However the Red Bulls GM earlier in the week couldn't contain his excitement at signing any out of contract players from the powerhouses of Barcelona or Real Madrid. And the Bulls certainly do need some help after a MLS worst 5-19-6 record as well as scoring a league worst 0.9 goals per game; bizarrely their goal tally at home placed them 2nd in the Eastern League but they only managed 3 goals over 15 away games. Adding Raul, who despite his long career is only 32, with a historical strike rate of 0.42 goals per game could be the shot in the arm that the New York Bulls desperately need.
